Push the Boat Out – Fri 13th July

Bombskare and Lorraine McCauley & The Borderlands are teaming up to put on a unique music event – Push the Boat Out – on Friday July 13th at a boat building workshop in Govan, The GalGael Trust. Among the benches and boats this creative workshop will be transformed into a live music venue for 200 people to enjoy the folk songs of Lorraine McCauley, topped off with an explosive live performance by Bombskare, Scotland’s top Ska band.

For the past fifteen years, the GalGael, have been an anchor point in Govan around which local people are re-kindling skills, community and a sense of purpose. One of the ways in which they have achieved this is through involving the community in building and sailing traditional boats. It was these traditional boats that attracted the attention of the very talented Lorraine McCauley & The Borderlands. With a new album coming out they wanted to film a music video on board for the track Stepping Stones. The band visited GalGael’s workshops in Fairley Street last year with an impromptu performance for the trainees and the idea for a benefit gig was born.

For the last six of GalGael’s fifteen years their work has taken place through their unique programme; Navigate Life. Navigate Life offered a workbench, tools and respect as the basis of a restorative journey lasting 12 weeks. In the past six years, 445 people made that journey with 202 people acquiring an SVQ certificate – for many their first qualification. Participants were in no doubt about the impact that the experience had on their lives; ‘I felt like a different person… I looked forward to getting up and out every day; I had a reason to keep going for the first time in years’

Despite the programme’s successes, Navigate Life came to an end in April this year with funding cuts. Lorraine and the Borderlands offer of a benefit became more necessary to help ensure GalGael were able to continue their unique brand of social innovation. Lorraine drafted in friends Bombskare, Scotland’s 9-man ska band to pull together a night that will be a one-off music event – Push the Boat Out – in amongst the boats and benches of GalGael’s workshop.

Tickets on sale at http://galgaelpushtheboatout.eventbrite.com , Coda Music, Edinburgh and at The GalGael, 15 Fairley Street, Govan G51 2SN.

Push the Boat Out: Galgael Fundraiser Gig – Friday 13th July

Bombskare and Lorraine McCauley & The Borderlands are teaming up to put on a unique gig in an amazing Viking Boat Building Workshop in Govan, called The Galgael.

Bombskare, Scotland’s 9-man ska juggernaut has been tearing up stages the length and breadth of the British Isles. Their trademark ska rhythms and lush harmonies, together with choppy guitar sounds and an explosive horn section truly blows the audience away. So it’s little wonder, The Scotsman, crowned them “Scotland’s premier ska band”.

BBC introduced singer – songwriter Lorraine McCauley will release her debut album this summer with her band The Borderlands. They recently supported Karine Powart, who has tipped them as the breakthrough act of 2012. Having visited the Galgael as a potential music video location, Lorraine and the Borderlands were blown away by the tremendous work carried out at the project. So it is with the support of the Galgael and Bombskare that the band will host this exciting fundraiser gig.

Together both bands will raise the roof and funds for the Galgeal, so don’t miss this unique one off event. All funds raised will go to support the wonderful work of The Galgael to find out more about their work go to http://www.galgael.org

So come join us on Friday 13th of July (lucky for some) at the Galgael to Push the Boat Out!

2012 – An exciting year ahead for Lorraine & The Borderlands

For Lorraine & The Borderlands  2012 is off to a great start. Beginning with a well needed winter warmer gig at the Big Burn Supper, Dumfries. They will be playing along side some of Knockengorrach’s favorite Scottish acts such as Spartan Tartan, Bombskare and Mungo’s Hi-fi featuring MC Soom T. Knockengorroch organiser Liz Holmes said ‘We’re very pleased to be celebrating Scotand’s national bard’s birthday with a special event – the evening will be much more than a gig or another club – it will be a ‘mini winter Knock Festival’.

January will also see Lorraine & The Borderlands performing at Celtic Connections as they have been selected to play at the new comers Danny Kyle Open Stage contest. The stage runs every night throughout the festival and 6 winning acts will be chosen from the 80 competitors to play at next years festival. So wish them luck! You can listen live to their performance on Jan 31st on Celtic Music Radio from 5pm-7pm.

In March Lorraine will see one of dreams come true as the band will support her folk heroine Karine Polwart. Acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriter Karine Polwart will play her first Edinburgh show in two years. Playing at the Grey Friars Kirk on March 28th this Green Party Fundraiser gig will really be something special.

With the debut album on the way and Karine Polwart commenting that Lorraine & The Borderlands are “promising to be one of the breakthrough acts of the year”, its seems 2012 will be a busy and eventful year ahead for the band.

Lorraine’s Wee Irish Tour 2011

From what started out with humble beginnings, Lorraine’s Wee Irish Tour turned into a country wide 10 date tour. Supporting Irish acts from Malin head to Mizen head Lorraine played alongside some of Irelands biggest Folk musicians including John Spillane, The High Kings, The Henry Girls and LOWmountain.

This was Lorraine’s first time to play in venues around Ireland as she started her musical career in Japan. Lorraine and The Borderlands also performed live on Newstalks Green Room show and had great gigs in Whelans, the DeBarra Folk Club and MacCarthys at Dingle. Lorraine & The Borderlands looks forward to returning to play in Ireland again following the launch their debut album early next year.
